‘Muhafiz’ scheme launched in JK to empower workers of unorganized sector

Jammu, January 9: A scheme named "Muhafiz" (Guardian) was launched on Monday in a bid to empower workers of unorganized sector economically and socially of Jammu and Kashmir.

 

Notably, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti taking an initiative from the front to empower workers of unorganized sector economically and socially launched a scheme named as "Muhafiz" (Guardian) to provide them institutionalized socio-economic security.

Under this scheme, as many as three lakh workers registered with the Jammu and Kashmir Building and Other Construction Workers' Welfare Board (JKBOCWWB) would be covered under accidental, life and disability insurance.

CM Mufti also unveiled the microcredit linked debit card of the JK Bank for these workers. She further launched the insurance scheme for them and the website of Workers' Welfare Board. Importantly, the scheme has been launched to commemorate the second death anniversary of a former chief minister and PDP founder Mufti Muhammad Sayeed.

After launching the scheme, CM Mehbooba Mufti said, “Government is committed to the welfare of marginalized sections of society, particularly labour class who have seen enough exploitation in the past." The chief minister said, "Compensation in case of deaths, accidents or injuries has to be there. But efforts should be made to make their life better besides focusing on the education and upbringing of their wards."

CM Mufti also announced the enhancement of monthly scholarship for the children of these workers to Rs 1500, which was earlier Rs 1200. The CM further advised that the department will ensure that more and more workers, particularly female, are covered under the ambit of the scheme.
