New Delhi, October 10: Unboxing gifts this festive season, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi cleared proposal of granting bonus to over 12 lakh Indian Railways employees. The decision aims at providing 78 days wages as bonus ahead of Dussehra and Diwali. Indian Railways employees have been getting the same productivity-linked bonus for the last six years and the central government continued granting it this year as well.

Speaking to media after cabinet meeting, Information and Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, bonus equivalent to 78 days' wages will be given to non gazetted railway employees. The maximum amount payable per eligible railway employee is 17,951 for 78 days.

About 11.91 lakh non-gazetted Railway employees are likely to benefit from the decision. Ravi Shankar Prasad said the move is expected to motivate the employees to work towards improving the performance of the Railways.

The financial implication of payment of 78 days’ Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) to railway employees has been estimated to be Rs.2044.31 crore. The wage calculation ceiling prescribed for payment of PLB to the eligible non-gazetted railway employees is Rs.7000/- p.m. The maximum amount payable per eligible railway employee is Rs.17,951 for 78 days. About 11.91 lakh non-gazetted Railway employees are likely to benefit from the decision.

The bonus amount is likely to be around Rs 18,000. It will benefit around 12.26 lakh non-gazetted railway employees. The PLB is paid to these employees every year before the Dussehra festival. The PLB, however, doesn't apply for the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF) personnel.

The bonus will come as a relief to these employees who, along with other central government employees have been demanding a revision in the wages provided to them as per the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission.
