London, October 15: Britain, France and Germany insisted that "light must be shed" on the where about of journalist Jamal Khashoggi as they called for a credible investigation into his disappearance.

In a joint statement issued in London, said whoever was responsible for the Saudi journalist's disappearance must be held to account. Khashoggi, a Washington Post contributor, vanished after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to obtain official documents for his upcoming marriage.

Meanwhile, Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Saudi King Salman had discussed the issue over the telephone. The two countries also agreed to set up a joint working group to discuss the missing of Khashoggi.

"We encourage joint Saudi-Turkish efforts in that regard, and expect the Saudi Government to provide a complete and detailed response. We have conveyed this message directly to the Saudi authorities," the statement by British foreign minister Jeremy Hunt, France's Jean-Yves Le Drian and Germany's Heiko Maas said.

Khashoggi, a Saudi national who had been based in the US, has been missing since Oct. 2, when he visited the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul to secure divorce papers.
