Goa: Two Congress MLAs resign from party; join BJP

Panaji, October 16: Goa Congress MLAs Subhash Shirodkar and Dayanand Sopte have resigned as members of the state assembly this afternoon. This was confirmed by the Goa legislative assembly speaker Pramod Sawant. Sawant said their resignations have been conveyed through fax and telephonically.



 

Shirodkar was an MLA from the Shiroda constituency while Sopte was an MLA from Mandrem. The two MLAs have also resigned from the Congress Party.

Dayanand Sopte and Subhash Shirodkar, reached Delhi past Monday midnight, and had an early morning meeting with BJP president Amit Shah. They faxed their resignation letters to the assembly soon after.

On the other side, Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Sunday returned to his home state from New Delhi, where he was undergoing treatment at the AIIMS for a pancreatic ailment. A statement from Parrikar’s personal secretary Rupesh Kamat said, “Chief Minister arrived back in Goa Sunday evening. He is recovering and his Health parameters are stable. Line of treatment from AIIMS will be continued.”

 

Parrikar, 62, was on Sunday morning discharged from the AIIMS. He was flown in a special flight that landed on Sunday afternoon at the Dabolim airport and was taken to his private residence at Dona Paula near here in an ambulance. According to sources in the AIIMS, the Goa Chief Minister was in the morning shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for a while after his condition deteriorated. But later, the administration decided to discharge him.
