Self-styled godman Sant Rampal sentenced to life imprisonment in connection to murder cases

Hisar, October 16: Self-styled godman, Sant Rampal has been sentenced to life imprisonment in his verdict from the court in a murder case. The case related to the deaths of four women and a child. Rampal was convicted in the murder case last week. A sessions court on Tuesday sentenced self-styled godman and Satlok Ashram head Rampal to life imprisonment in connection with two murder cases against him. The quantum of punishment was announced from a makeshift court in the premises of Hisar Central Jail due to law and order concerns.

 

While pronouncing the punishment, the court said that Rampal will remain in prison until the end of his life. The four women and the child died near Rampal's Satlok Ashram in Haryana in 2014. The deaths took place during clashes between Rampal's supporters and the police, which had come to arrest the godman in a separate murder case. Apart from Rampal, the quantum of punishment was also announced for 22 of his supporters who had participated in the violent clashed with the police.

The court of additional district and sessions judge (ADJ) DR Chalia had given the verdict on Thursday after final arguments in the case were presented on last Monday. Security in and around Hisar was tight on Tuesday to avoid any untoward incidents by his supporters. Over 2,000 security personnel had been deployed to keep the situation in check.

The self-styled godman, Rampal has already been in convicted in that murder case involving the death of a woman in 2006. The punishment in the 2006 murder case will be announced tomorrow.

In both the murder cases, one in 2014 and the other in 2006 -- Rampal was charged under Sections 302 (murder) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.

Rampal was convicted in both the cases on October 11. A makeshift court was set up within the Hisar Central Jail in Haryana where Rampal is being held for both the verdict and the announcement of the quantum of punishment.
