Gujarat govt declares 51 talukas as water scarcity hit

Gandhinagar, October 24: The Gujarat government declared 51 talukas, comprising 3,291 villages, as scarcity hit owing to scanty rains on Tuesday. Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said in Ahmedabad that 10 talukas of Kutch district, nine of Banaskantha district, eight of Patan district, seven of Surendranagar district and four each of Ahmedabad and Mehasana districts were declared as scarcity hit on Tuesday.


 

He said all talukas which recorded less than 250 mm of rains in this monsoon have been declared scarcity hit by the government and relief work in these talukas will begin from December 1.

Last month, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani declared Kutch as 'scarcity hit district' after it received just 26.51 percent rains this monsoon.

After chairing a meeting to review state's water situation, CM Rupani said at Bhuj that besides Kutch district, all tehsils which have received less than 125 mm of rainfall, have also been declared rain scarcity hit with effect from October 1.

He said that drinking water pipeline projects worth Rs. 296 crore for Kutch district would be taken up on a war footing. He added that the district would get subsidies as per government rules and norms.

The Chief Minister added that Subsidies would be given to gaushalas (cow shelters) and panjrapoles (animal shelters) and new panjrapoles would be opened in the affected areas. He said that Drinking water will be provided to the district from the Sardar Sarovar Dam.
