Satara, October 3: Swiping the right cards, Satara district of Maharashtra has clinched the number one spot in Swachh Sarvekshan Gramin 2018. With this Satara has become the cleanest district in India. The district has been ranked at the top place in India on the basis of quantitative and qualitative sanitation parameters in rural areas.

The prize was given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Rashtrapati Bhavan on October 2. In the earlier years, Satara Zilla Parishad had earlier secured third place in the country by constructing toilets.

The Centre had conducted a survey of 6,980 villages in 698 districts of the country. 100 marks in the quantitative and qualitative analysis were done. In Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in April had declared rural areas of the state open defecation-free (ODF) and claimed the state had constructed the highest number of toilets in the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called the open defecation free (ODF) a movement of respect for motherhood and women.

A short film on Swachhta Movement by Zilla Parishad Satara:-

Maharashtra has always been ahead in regards to cleanliness and hygiene. The state has shown considerable growth in creating awareness on hygiene and sanitation of the people; not only in urban but also rural areas. Constructing toilets and making people aware about cleanliness has given an upswing to ODF.

Initiative of the state government and active people’s participation has made the urban and rural Maharashtra a totally open defecation free (ODF) state, announced Chief Minister Devendra Fadanvis at the Mahatma Gandhi International Swachhata Conference organised here on Monday. He assured that by 2019 each one in the state’s rural areas will be given a house to live and potable water.

Maharashtra responded positively to the call of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ‘Swachha Bharat Abhiyan’. The state had 50 lakh toilets from independence to 2014 and cleanliness works accounted for 45%. In the past three years additional 60 lakh toilets were constructed and the scope of the cleanliness works was raised by 55% taking it to 100%.
