Stage set for grand ‘Statue of Unity’ event

Kevadia (Narmada), Oct 30: Gujarat’s Kevadia is all decked up for the inaugural ceremony of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s 182-meter statue. Marking the 143rd birth anniversary of the ‘iron man of India’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unveil the grand Statue.

A dream project of the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, the world’s highest statue has been erected at Sadhu Bet island near Sardar Sarovar Dam in Narmada district of Gujarat.

Besides Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP National President Amit Shah, senior leader L K Adwani, MM Joshi and Chief Ministers of all will attend the gala event.

With the whopping budget of 2,989 crore, internationally acclaimed construction firms like Larsen & Toubro, and Michael Graves Architecture and Designs, Turner Construction were instrumental in crafting the gigantic figure.

Award-winning sculptor Ram V. Sutar was roped in to look after the facial features of the Sardar Patel.

Near about 1,700 tonnes of bronze and 1,850 tonnes of bronze cladding on the exterior were used to build a 182-meter long statue. As a part of mass outreach drive, 135 metric tonnes of iron were collected from villages all over India.

The core of the Statue is made up of reinforced concrete while surface by 553 bronze panels. The statue has a facility of gallery at height of 193 meters from sea level which can accommodate 200 visitors.

In 2013 admits much fanfare, Modi laid the foundation stone for world’s largest statue, as a tribute to the visionary Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who is credited for uniting Indian states.
