Not against development, but no compromise of people’s lives: Kamal Haasan on Sterlite plant

Chennai, Oct 5: Continuing his opposition to Vedanta’s Sterlite plant Makkal Needhi Maiam founder Kamal Haasan said that lives of people should not be compromised at any cost.

Speaking to the media, the actor-politician clarified that Makkal Needhi Maiam is not against development but environmental violations and other issues should be addressed by the stakeholders. Responding to actor Vijay’s call on Tamil Nadu politics, the Ulagnayagan appreciated former’s stand on corruption.

As quoted by Times of India, a delegation of Haasan's outfit today met National Green Tribunal official and expressed reservations about the Sterlite’s expansion plan helmed by the Vedanta group. The party also summited a detailed memorandum to a three-member panel appointed by the green body.

On the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Makkal Needhi Maiam convened a ‘gram panchayat’ a pet project of the award-winning actor who terms himself as a proud fan of Mahatma Gandhi. The 63-year old actor turned activist personally attended the proceedings at Coimbatore.

Last seen in Vishwaroopam 2, the ace actor will be joint the sets Indian 2, directed by iconic film-maker Shankar.

On May 22, 13 people were killed in police firing during the anti-Sterlite protest. Anticipating the law and order problem, the state government had ordered the complete closure of Vedanta’s Sterlite plant in Tuticorin. Several social and political outfits were staging a protest against the industrial establishment citing the degradation of the environment in the state.
