Mumbai, Nov 15: The late Laxmanrao Inamdar toiled hard to spread the cooperative movement by inculcating ‘samskars’ in the individuals. This movement will now become a people’s movement by adopting the principle of reform, perform and transform’ and achieve balanced growth of rural and urban areas, said Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu here on Thursday.

He was delivering a commemoration lecture on the occasion of Late Laxmanrao Inamdar birth centenary celebrations. Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao, Speaker Haribhau Bagde, Education Minister Vinod Tawde, brother of late Laxmanrao Inamdar and his family members, President of Sahkar Bharti JYotindra Mehta, Secretary Dr Uday Joshi, Mumbai University VC Prof Suhas Pednekar, Pro-VC Ravindra Kulkarni and others were present on the occasion.

The Vice President showered praised on Sahkar Bharti for its relentless contribution to engage the cooperative movement in the mission of national reconstruction by adopting the principle “Bina Samskar nahi Sahkar” (No cooperation sans Samskars).

Naidu said that India is an agrarian economy and even today 56% people are working in the agriculture sector. Though we have a better agriculture producing capacity, we need to maintain this in view of the growing mouths to feed in the future. Global climate changes, reducing rainfall, growing industrialisation, and urbanization have forced us to drift away from agriculture and farming based sectors. That is why in the coming period we need to conduct experiments in farming. For this, the cooperative sector must lend a helping hand to the farming sector. Various schemes for the farmers are required to be taken to the farmers and it would be necessary for this sector to go hand in hand with the modern technology.

Transforming cooperative movement into popular movement is need of the hour, he said adding that to achieve this there should be coordination, and feeling of oneness should be imbibed. In the rush of liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation (LPG), cooperative movement can be the best alternative in the economic field. Cooperative can be the powerful alternative in free market economy. The time has arrived for all of us working in this movement to come together, to imbibe moral values and exhibit the scope and capability of the movement. While dong this we need to elucidate the active participation of women and youth, Naidu said. Lack of active participation of women and youth in the cooperative movement is one of the challenges confronting this sector, he added.

Share and Care is our culture
Naidu said that the Indian culture is well enshrined in the principle of “Share and Care”. We must have a cooperative attitude towards our families, society, and country. The competition in cooperative movement is unlimited. Unity in Diversity is our identity. People from this country have contributed in various fields at different times in the history. Today the farmers sell their products at a very cheap rate and the middlemen earns huge profits on them. The cooperative movement has the capacity to resolve people’s issues. This movement is commensurate with the nature of the Indian society, the Vice President said.

He also said that we need to create a robust cooperative movement and structure to succeed in E-marketing strategies.

Speaker Haribhau Bagde in his speech explained the contribution of Late Laxmanrao Inamdar in developing and strengthening cooperative movement. Mumbai University VC Prof Pednekar made the introductory remarks while Sahkar Bharati Secretary Dr Uday Joshi proposed vote of thanks.
