Assessing the situation after cyclone Gaja, Central team begins damage evaluation in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, November 23: As Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami met Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the disaster caused due to Cyclone Gaja, the Centre has deployed a five member team for an on-the-spot assessment of the damage caused by cyclone Gaja that lashed the Tamil Nadu coast on November 16.

 

The central team would take a note and access the damage caused due to the Cyclone and likewise address the Central government about the same. From there, the team will inspect the affected areas in Pudukottai district. On Sunday too, the team will continue assessment in other districts and on Monday afternoon, it will have a wrap-up meeting with Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan before leaving for New Delhi.

The team is led by a senior official in the Union Home Ministry Daniel E Richard. The team would meet Chief Minister K Palaniswami on Saturday. It is expected to complete its assessment in three days starting with a visit to Tiruchirapalli tomorrow.

During his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi Thursday, Palaniswami sought about Rs 15,000 crore as central assistance towards relief and rehabilitation activities in cyclone-hit districts of the state.

The Tamil Nadu government has put the toll due to the cyclone at 63. The seven-member team will begin the visit with a detailed discussion with the Chief Minister. After visiting different districts affected by the cyclone, the team will meet the Chief Secretary on Monday before leaving for Delhi.
