Veteran Kannada actor and former Union Minister Ambareesh dies at 66

Bengaluru, Nov 26: Veteran Kannada actor and former Union Minister Ambareesh on Saturday passed away due to multiple ailments. The 66- year actor turned politician was away from public life due to prolonged illness. He leaves behind multi-lingual actress Sumalatha and son Abhishek.

Fondly known as ‘Rebel Star’ of Kannada film-dome, Ambareesh represented the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting under the leadership of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and also worked with former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

A three-time MP, Ambareesh represented Mandya Lok Sabha segment. In 2006 he was promoted as Minister of State in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. In 1994, the award-winning actor began his political stint with JD(S) and later switched to Congress.

Expressing grief over the demise of Ambareesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter paid tributes to the former Minister.

In 1972 Ambareesh started his film career with 'Naagarahaavu'. The maverick actor has acted in over 200 films. As a mark of respect, the Karnataka government declared a three-day state mourning. His cremation will be held with full state honors.
