More women opt for management studies

Mumbai, Nov 27: “The IIMs are consciously giving leverage to women to increase diversity in classrooms. We want more women in our institutes”, said CAT convener Sumanta Basu.

In CAT 2018 Exam, 50% more women candidates appeared than last six years. This year 84350 women had registered for Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted on November 25 as against to 56409 in 2013.

CAT revealed data for the two years which says, in all, there were 2.41 lakh aspirants this year, compared to 2.29 lakh last year of whom 78,009 were women. Of the 12,000 more candidates who registered, 6,300 were women in the last two years.

The jump was highest in 2015 CAT, where women candidates were 76704. But the overall registration had gone up significantly.

The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIMC) has registered the highest number of women students ever for the 2017-19 batch.

This year, IIM-C has seen a two-fold rise in the number of women candidates joining the PGDM batch.

"The girls performed incredibly well in the interview and got through on their own steam," IIM C admission chairperson Pritam Basu was quoted as saying by a national daily.
