New Delhi, Nov 27: Election Commissioner Sunil Arora is appointed as a Chief Election Commissioner of India. President Ramnath Kovind has appointed Arora to this post. He will take charge on December 2. He succeeds Om Prakash Rawat who retires on Saturday.

Sunil Arora was born on 13 April 1956 in Hoshiarpur, Punjab. He graduated (BA Honours) and did his postgraduation (MA) in English from Punjab University, Chandigarh. Before being appointed as an IAS officer, Sunil Arora served as an associate professor in DAV College in Jalandhar. He belonged to 1980 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Rajasthan cadre. He has served as a secretary to the Government of India in two ministries.

Arora assumed office as one of the two Election Commissioners of India on 31 August 2017.

Arora worked as a Director General and CEO of Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs, Information and Broadcasting Secretary of India, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Secretary of India.

Arora has worked in ministries such as finance, textiles and the Planning Commission.
