New Delhi, Nov 28: Questioning Central Water Commission’s green single to Karnataka government’s project report for the construction of a new dam across Cauvery River at Mekedatu, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has sought Prime Minister Modi’s intervention to fix the controversial issue.

In an official communication, the Chief Minister said that the center should revoke Central Water Commission’s order which allows the Karnataka government to construct a balancing reservoir at Mekedat across the Cauvery river. He demanded that the Central government should refrain from clearing any Cauvery related matter without consulting stakeholder.

Opposing the construction of Mekedatu dam, Palaniswami stated that the Karnataka government’s project report is the clear violation of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal Award where the neighboring state is trying to expand its irrigation network which is against the Tribunal directives.

Palaniswami said that Central Water Commission should withdraw the permission given to the state of Karnataka and also sought immediate action against the Mekedatu project. He opined that the Central Water Commission’s approval would affect the lives of Tamil Nadu farmers.
