PM Modi prioritizing nation's development over G20 summit
New Delhi, November 30: Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Buenos Aires the capital of Argentina for the 10th annual G20 summit, scheduled to begin today. The theme of the G20 summit is ‘Building Consensus for a Fair and Sustainable Development’. In his departure statement issued in New Delhi, PM Modi said through the 10 years of its existence, the G-20 had strived to promote stable and sustainable global growth.
“The objective of the summit overall is of particular significance for developing countries and emerging economies such as India, which is today the fastest growing large economy in the world. I will highlight the need for reformed multilateralism which reflects the contemporary realities and can effectively strengthen collective action for global good", said PM Modi
The Indian community residing in Argentina, warmly welcomed Modi at hotel in the capital city. “Thousands of kilometres apart, yet bound together by the spirit of oneness! Extremely grateful to the Indian community for the memorable welcome in Argentina.”, tweeted Modi after meeting the community.
In the series of tweets further, he mentioned about the successful meeting with the UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The duo discussed on the variety of global issues, focus being on mitigating climate change and India’s efforts in this regard through initiatives like the International Solar Alliance.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed met PM Modi discussing cooperation between the two countries in security, energy and investments. “The two leaders, who met in the prince's residence in Buenos Aires, also discussed Saudi Arabia's readiness to supply India with all its needs of oil and petroleum products and Saudi oil giant Aramco's investments in the fields of oil refining and oil storage in India. The crown prince and Modi also agreed on investing in solar energy”, the Saudi press agency reported.
Meanwhile, PM Modi said that the 190 participants in the summit will be discussing the situation of global economy, international finance and tax systems, women empowerment and the future of work. "I look forward to meeting leaders from other G-20 countries to review the work of G-20 in the last ten years of its existence and chart the ways and means to meet the new and upcoming challenges of the coming decade," he added.
This year’s G20 gathering is expected to be one of the most consequential summits since the group’s leaders first met in 2008 to plan how to contain the economic crisis. Financial and commodities markets are closely watching the outcome of the summit, especially the planned meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday.
