Supreme Court summons Centre, Karnataka over Mekedatu reservoir

 

Taking objection to the permission granted by Central Water Commission for the construction of Mekedatu balancing reservoir, Tamil Nadu had moved to the apex court and challenged the order of the central water body.

In a bid to address the issues raised by the neighboring state, senior Congress leader and Karnataka Irrigation Minister DK Shivakumar wrote an official letter to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and expressed the need for an amicable solution.

In an official letter, Shivakumar said, “We desire an amicable solution as people of both states want a permanent solution on issues pertaining to the Cauvery.”

Days after the official green signal from Central Water Commission, the Minister personally went to ground zero and personally inspected the developments of Mekedatu balancing reservoir project which is to be built across the river Cauvery.

In response to Shiva Kumar’s reach outdrive, Tamil Nadu turned down the proposal of talks and asked them to drop the plan of Mekedatu project. The Central Water Commission (CWC) had already cleared the pre-feasibility report of Karnataka.

Tamil Nadu government alleged that with the Mekedatu project, the neighboring state is trying to expand its irrigation network which is against the directives of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal Award.
