Deep depression over Bay of Bengal hovers southern states; IMD issues warning of cyclonic storm

Chennai, December 14: The southern states of India are under the cover of deep depression over the south of Bay of Bengal which is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm over the next 24 hours. The Indian Meteorological Department stated that the cyclonic storm is expected to move towards Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coast over the next 72 hours and the regions could witness heavy to very heavy rainfall.

 

The IMD has stated a low pressure which is forming in the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring heavy showers to parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu over this weekend. Adding further it also notified that over the 12 hours, the low-pressure area over south Bay of Bengal and the adjacent Indian Oceans would intensify into a deep depression and would result in moderate to heavy rainfalls seen in North Tamil Nadu and south-coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh.

 

Warning the fishermen against venturing into the sea, the IMD has informed that the wind speed is expected to reach 50 to 60 Kilometers per hour. A decrease in the heavy rain spells and windy is expected by December 17, as the weather system will have crossed over towards the northwest.

It has been noticed that there is a chance of heavy to very heavy rains over several districts including Nellore, Prakasam and Chittoor.

 

According to the data given on the IMD’s website, the temperature for the week in Chennai is expected to be at a minimum of 23 degrees Celsius and at a maximum of 31 degrees Celsius. Moderate to heavy rain is expected over the next few days. The public has been cautioned to take the necessary measures in view of the predicted rains.

As per statistics on IMD, there is a 51% deficit in the rainfall recorded in Chennai between October 1 and December 5. Chennai should have received 674.9mm of rainfall, but only has recorded 331.8mm so far.
