Bhopal, December 13: The Congress has named Kamal Nath as the new chief minister of the Madhya Pradesh. The decision was arrived after hectic discussion held by party chief Rahul Gandhi with the senior leaders in Delhi. Nath however managed to win over the top existing contender, Jyoyiraditya Sindhya. Nath will be taking oath of the position Lal Parade ground in Bhopal on 17th of December this year.

The announcement of the new chief minister was made in Bhopal. Kalmal Nath said that the congress will fulfil all promises that it made for the state. He met the Governor of Madhya Pradesh Anandiben Patel, taking forward the government formation and discuss the details of the swearing ceremony.

"I want to thank those who supported Congress party... I am confident that the future of Madhya Pradesh would be secured... I want to assure the people of Madhya Pradesh that we will fulfill our promises," CM designate Kamal Nath says.

He promised of building a cow shelter each in the state’s 23,026 gram panchayats if the party is elected to power. He had already built a 101.8-foot Lord Hanuman statue, among the tallest in the country, near Chhindwara, his own constituency.

Nath is seen as a family loyalist ever since he was inducted by Sanjay Gandhi in the 1970s. His role in the Emergency led to the slogan “Indira ke do haath, Sanjay Gandhi aur Kamal Nath”. He was one of the Congress leaders who strongly urged Rahul to take over as Congress president.

Nath’s wealth of experience, banked wisdom and goodwill helped the Congress trump a seasoned campaigner like 'Mama' Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Young guns are preferred in almost all spheres now but in politics, the old warhorses still win you races.

Nath today is a veteran politician and perhaps the most prominent Gandhi family loyalist today. When he was named the Congress chief in Madhya Pradesh, many in the party recalled that former prime minister Indira Gandhi described him as her third son who helped her take on the Morarji Desai-led regime in 1979.
