PM Modi invites his Bhutanese parallel to celebrate the Golden Jubliee of diplomatic relations undertakings

New Delhi, December 24: Bhutan Prime Minister Dr Lotay Tshering is set to visit India from 27-29 December, 2018 at the invitation of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to mark the Golden Jubliee year of establishment of the diplomatic relations between India and Bhutan. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Economic Affairs and other senior officials from the Royal Government of Bhutan will be accompanying the Prime Minister of Bhutan.
 
The traditionally unique bilateral relations, characterized by trust and understanding have matured over the years. During the visit, Prime Minister of Bhutan will call on to the Indian President Ram Nath Kovind and the Vice President M Venkhaiah Naidu followed by the talks with the Prime Minister Modi. The External Affairs Minister to India, Sushma Swaraj and other Ministers will call on the Prime Minister of Bhutan.
 
India and Bhutan enjoy exemplary ties of friendship and cooperation, based on utmost trust, goodwill and mutual understanding at all levels. “The upcoming visit of the Prime Minister Dr. Lotay Tshering will provide an opportunity to the two sides to review the progress in our multifaceted partnership and to discuss ways and means to expand the enduring ties of friendship and cooperation for the benefit of the two peoples.”, the statement reported.
 
Diplomatic relations between India and Bhutan were established in year 1968 with the establishment of a special office of India in Thimphu. Before this our relations with Bhutan were looked after by our Political Officer in Sikkim. The basic framework of India- Bhutan bilateral relations was the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation signed in 1949 between the two countries, which was revised in February 2007.The India-Bhutan Friendship Treaty not only reflects the contemporary nature of our relationship but also lays the foundation for their future development in the 21st century.
 
The special relationship between the duo has been sustained by the tradition of regular visits and high level dialogues between the two countries. After being elected Prime Minister of Bhutan , Lyonchhen Tshering Tobgay undertook his first official visit to India from 30 August to 4 September, 2013. Also he along with a 6-member delegation which included Foreign Minister again visited India from 25- 28 May, 2014 for the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
 
India being a leading development aid partner for Bhutan, there are a number of institutional mechanisms between India and Bhutan in areas like security, border management, trade, economy, hydroelectricity, development cooperation and water resources.
