RBI to instigate distinctly different currency design of Rs 20

 

 

Mumbai, December 25: Currency notes reflect the nation’s rich and diverse culture, her struggle for freedom and her proud achievements as a nation. With a view to bringing the identity closer to the cultural heritage of the country as also for showcasing her scientific advances, a new series of notes in a new design is being launched.

 

After the new currency series for Rs 2000, Rs 500 , Rs200, Rs100, Rs 50, Rs10 respectively, the central bank is set to launch the new note of Rs 20 different from the current currency design. The new design bank notes are distinctly different from the current Mahatma Gandhi Series of bank notes in colour, size and theme. The theme of the new series notes is India’s heritage sites.

 

According to the RBI data bank, there were 4.92 billion pieces of Rs 20 note in circulation as on March 31, 2016. The number more than doubled to about 10 billion pieces by March 2018. The Rs 20 notes accounted for 9.8 per cent of the total number of currency notes in circulation at the end of March 2018.

 

A few new other elements added in these notes are numerals in devnagari and the logo of Swachh Bharat. The new notes also have design elements in myriad and intricate forms and shapes.

 

“While the security features in the current series of bank notes, such as water mark, security thread, latent image of denomination numeral, colour shifting ink, number panels, see through register, electro-type and bleed lines continue to remain, their relative positions may have changed in the new design notes.”, reported the official statement.
