In 2002, Gordhan Zadaphia who was heading the Home department came under fire over his alleged role in the horrifying communal violence. In 2007, he floated his own outfit but failed to make any mark.

During 2012 Gujarat assembly polls, Zadaphia joined the camp of Keshu Bhai Patel led Gujarat Parivartan Party but returned in 2014 and supported the leadership of the Chief Minister and BJP’s Prime Ministerial Candidate Narendra Modi. On several occasion, Zadaphia openly criticized the policies of Narendra Modi government.

In 2014, then BJP National Chief Rajnath Singh had appointed Amit Shah for the UP assignment which eventually paid off where BJP bagged 73 segments out of 80.
