Bengaluru, Dec 4: Expressing confidence over the roll-out of Mekedatu project in Cauvery basin, Karnataka Water Resources Minister D K Shivakumar said that the state government will address the issues raised by neighboring state Tamil Nadu.

“we will convince Tamil Nadu about the utility of the vital project,” the Minister said. The senior Congress leader announced that he will be personally monitoring the developments of the Mekedatu project.

After the much-awaited clearance from Central Water Commission (CWC) on December 7, a high-level panel led by D K Shivakumar will take the stock of Mekedatu ground zero.

As per the directions of the central water body, the Karnataka government will submit a detailed project report on the Mekedatu venture. The Central Water Commission (CWC) had already cleared the pre-feasibility report of Karnataka.

Reacting to Central Water Commission’s green single, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami shot a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding a timely intervention in the contentious matter.

Opposing the construction of Mekedatu dam, Palaniswami stated that the Karnataka government’s project report is the clear violation of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal Award where the neighboring state is trying to expand its irrigation network which is against the Tribunal directives.
