INS Kalvari Submarine: Pride of India

Mumbai, Dec 8 : 8th December 1967 is the date of commissioning of “INS Kalvari (S-23) the first Submarine of the Indian Navy.

INS Kalvari (S21) is the first of the six Kalvari-class submarines currently in service with the Indian Navy. It is a diesel-electric attack submarine which is designed by DCNS (French naval defense and energy company) and was manufactured at Mazagon Dock Limited in Mumbai


Kalvari is the Malayalam word for a tiger shark, a deep-sea predator in the Indian Ocean. The name symbolizes agility, strength and predatory power.

The day "8th December" is observed by the Indian Navy as the “Submarine Day”- the foundation day of the Indian Navy’s Submarine Arm. First Indian Submarine INS Kalvari - 08 Dec 1967 under Cdr KS Subramanian.





INS Kalvari (S-23) - a Foxtrot class submarine was built at Riga, erstwhile USSR. She was De-commissioned after 29 years of service on 31 May 1996. INS Kalvari's Fin (tower) is now installed at Beach Road, Vizag and is maintained by the Vizag City as part of its Museum.

 

 
 

The submarine was designated as Yard 11875 at Mazagon Dock Limited and construction began on 14 December 2006 with the first cutting of steel. The five separate sections of the submarine were welded together, called 'Boot Together', on 30 July 2014. She was undocked to a pontoon from the East Yard dock on 6 April 2015 in the presence of Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar
