FAO accept India’s proposal to celebrate international year of Millets in 2023

Rome DEC 8: India’s proposal to celebrate an international year of Millets in 2023 has been approved by FAO on 160th session held in Rome.

 

Agricultural Minister, Radha Mohan Singh conveyed his gratitude for the countries who supported this proposal.

 

Singh said on this occasion, “This will enhance global awareness to bring back those ‘nutri-cereals’to bring back to plate, for nutritional security of everyone”.

 

Millets consists of Jawar, Bajra, Ragi and other minor millets together termed as ‘Nutri-Cereals’.

 

This international endorsement come against the backdrop of India’s celebration of ‘2018’ as the National year of Millets for promoting cultivation and consumption of this nutria-cereals.

 

FAO council also approved India’s membership to the ‘Executive Board’ of United Nations World Food Program (WFP) for 2020 and 20121, the official statement said.
