Pyeongchang, February 10: Sending out the message of peace in a conflict-torn world 2018 Olympic Winter Games kicked off in PyeongChang on Friday with a gorgeous opening ceremony. The two hour long ceremony gifted the world a rare sight, the march of two Koreas under one flag. Millions of TV viewers around the world set their eyes on Television set to watch this spectacular ceremony.

The Olympics has returned to South Korea after 30 years of hosting Summer Games in 1988. The games villages are so close to nature as it is being held in the remote mountainous region of Gangwon Province. The usually quite remote corner was energized by a dazzling display of swirling light and dance.

The condition was almost near-freezing, could be the coldest opening ceremony in 24 years. The ceremony began with a spectacular show of lights in white, red and blue — the colors of the South Korean flag. The games is being held under the slogan, "Passion, Connected”. 92 nations with 2,920 athletes are participating in the Games.

The central characters of the PyeongChang 2018 Opening Ceremony were five Korean children – each representing one of the elements (fire, water, wood, metal and earth), which according to Korean traditional belief make up the universe. The Ceremony followed them on a journey through time, on a quest for the meaning of peace and harmony.

“The PyeongChang 2018 Winter Games will guide us to a world of reconciliation,” said the Organizing Committee President. “Just as the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games broke down the Cold War barrier between East and West 30 years ago, we hope that the two Koreas participating together in the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games will once again bring peace over our land.”
