Mansukh Mandaviya announces mega river-interlinking project for Gujarat

Surat, February 12: Underlining the importance of waterways in order to improve the industrial connectivity, Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that inland waterways would boost the economic prospects of coastal states. Speaking at the Stakeholders’ Conference on inland waterways, the Minister announced the mega river-linking plan to improve the efficiency of goods and passenger transportation.

 

Elaborating about the proposed infrastructure project, Mandaviya informed that central government is keen to interlink the rivers like Tapi, Narmada, Mahi, Luni, and Sabarmati. He further pointed that new trends in coastal shipping would play a key role in strengthening economic activity in the state.

Mandaviya maintained that development of waterways would reduce the transportations cost and other expenses associated with the conventional surface transport. Commenting on the ongoing progress of waterways development, the Minister asserted the NDA government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is committed to improving the existing infrastructure. He further added that central government has invested about Rs 1,200 crore in the past three years for the development of Inland Water Transport.
