Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar rejects demand of separate mining corporation

Panaji, February 13: Turning down the demand of NGO Goa Foundation, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar clarified that state government is not in favor of constituting any mining corporation in order to regulate the industry.

Speaking to the media on the recent verdict of the apex court, Parrikar stated that state government’s intervention might hamper the mining sector. Responding to the plea filed by NGO Goa Foundation, the supreme court had revoked the renewal of 88 mining leases and directed mining leaseholders to stop operations by March 15.

When asked about the impact of apex court’s ruling on state revenue, the Chief Minister said that state government is judiciously monitoring the situation and after studying various aspects of the Supreme Court order, the state will take the final call on resuming mining process.

Parrikar ruled any adverse effect on state revenue but expressed concern over the future of human resources who are dependent on the mining industry. Reacting to the demand raised by Congress party, Parrikar mentioned that state government is in favor of open bidding and cannot restrict process only for Goan mine owners.
