Enhanced textile industry in North-East to boost women empowerment

New Delhi, February 14: With a perspective to boost employment and increase infrastructure the textile industry pays special focus on North East Region. Development and modernization of the textile sector in the North Eastern states is being given the highest priority which will create jobs especially for women and will also create enhancement of roads, power, water supply and construction of offices.


 

The North East Region comprising of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura has been fully operational with the 21 ready-made manufacturing units. These units have boosted the textile industry and increase the export of ready made garments from these regions. Therefore it has been estimated that around Rs. 690 crores have been utilized for sericulture in these regions.

The factory has been operational for 2 years and there are almost 1200 employees mainly women. These factories are owned by local entrepreneurs and various agencies for promoting textile. The specific objectives of the Ministry is to increase the value of textile production, technological up-gradation, improvement in capability, better access to domestic markets and cauterization.

There are 23.77 lakh hand looms in the country of which 16.47 lakh hand looms (69.28%) are in the North East region as per the handloom census of 2009-10.
