New Delhi, February 14: Loads of wishes is being given to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today on her 66th birthday from all the corners of the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, other cabinet ministers, BJP workers, state Chief Ministers are wishing Sushma Swaraj on her birthday and prayed for her long life and good health. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on her 66th birthday and prayed for her long life and good health. He took to a twitter and said, “Birthday wishes to @SushmaSwaraj Ji. She has distinguished herself as an outstanding leader. As EAM, she plays a vital role in shaping India's foreign policy. Her proactive and compassionate nature has endeared her to Indians globally. I pray for her long life and good health.”


However, EAM Sushma Swaraj wasting no time thanked PM Modi for best wishes on her birthday. She said on Twitter, “Thank you Prime Minister @narendramodi for your kind words.”


Many other Ministers including Rajnath Singh, Piyush Goyal, Arun Jaitley, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore wished Sushma Swaraj on her birthday.



External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj recently said that Indian Embassies are homes away from home for the Indians who stay out of their country. Sushma Swaraj had proved this by hard work and dedication towards her duty right from the day one when she took charge as External Affairs Minister. She not only helped Indians in India, Indians in foreign countries but also helped foreigners whosoever asked her for help.


Sushma Swaraj wholeheartedly helped all the people who were in the problem, need etc. Sushma’s dedication, hard work, diplomacy gave results and those results led India to emerge as one of the kindest countries across the world. Right from the release of Indian nurses to the rescue of Father Tom Uzhunnalil, the whole world admired Sushma Swaraj. Sushma Swaraj after holding External Affairs Ministry in a bid to help mankind crossed all the boundaries.


Twelve commendable works of Sushma Swaraj during 4 years of her holding External Affairs Ministry are as follows:

  • Sushma Swaraj helped rescue 168 Indians being held hostage in Iraq.
  • Sushma Swaraj helped rescue and evacuate a woman being held in South Africa.
  • Sushma Swaraj helped rescue Father Tom Uzhunnalil who was abducted by Islamic State operatives.
  • Sushma Swaraj’s ministry pulled off a massive coordinated effort to rescue people during the Yemen crisis.
  • Sushma Swaraj rescued Uzma Ahmad who was forced to marry a Pakistani man at gunpoint.
  • During Yemen crisis, Sushma Swaraj not only helped Indians but also rescued foreigners.
  • Strengthened Diplomacy and initiatives of Sushma Swaraj forced pirates to handover captured Indian ship.
  • Sushma Swaraj helped out a woman who lost her passport and money in Germany.
  • Sushma Swaraj helped a man recover his passport and advance money from his company abroad.
  • When the Nepal earthquake prompted a swift and thorough response from her team.
  • When, even during the chaos after the quake, she took the time out to respond to individual concerns.
  • Sushma Swaraj came forward to help diaspora in Saudi Arabia during the crisis and distributed food to starving Indians who lost their jobs.

 

Personal Life 

Sushma Swaraj was born on 14 February 1952 in Ambala, Haryana. She has been elected seven times as a Member of Parliament and three times as a Member of the Legislative Assembly. She is an Advocate by profession and was educated at S.D.College, Ambala Cantt (Haryana) and Department of Laws, Punjab University, Chandigarh. Her alma mater Punjab University has honoured her with the degree of Doctor of Laws (Honoris causa).
 
Sushma Swaraj began her political career with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in the 1970s. She became a member of the Haryana Legislative Assembly and a Cabinet Minister in Haryana at the age of 25 in 1977. She became the President of Janata Party in Haryana in 1979, when she was 27. She was Education Minister, Haryana in the Bharatiya Janata Party–Lok Dal coalition government during 1987–90.

In April 1990, Sushma Swaraj was elected as a Member of the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Indian Parliament) and remained there till 1996. She was elected to 11th Lok Sabha (Lower House of Indian Parliament) from South Delhi Parliamentary constituency in 1996. She became Union Cabinet Minister for Information and Broadcasting in 1996. She was re-elected to 12th Lok Sabha in 1998 from South Delhi Parliamentary constituency for a second term. Again, she was Cabinet Minister for Information and Broadcasting with an additional charge of the Ministry of Telecommunications from March-October 1998.

Sushma Swaraj resigned from the Union Cabinet to take over as the first woman Chief Minister of Delhi in October 1998. Later, she returned to national politics and was Minister for Information & Broadcasting from September 2000 - January 2003 and Minister of Health & Family Welfare and Parliamentary Affairs from January 2003 to May 2004.

She was honoured with the "Outstanding Parliamentarian Award” in 2004. She is India’s first woman MP honoured with this award.

Sushma Swaraj was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha in April 2006 from Madhya Pradesh. She served as the Deputy Leader of BJP in Rajya Sabha till April 2009. She won the 2009 election to the 15th Lok Sabha from the Vidisha Lok Sabha constituency in Madhya Pradesh and became Leader of Opposition in the 15th Lok Sabha in December 2009. She retained this position till May 2014. She was re-elected to 16th Lok Sabha from Vidisha in 2014 and was sworn in as Minister of External Affairs on May 26, 2014.
