Maharashtra to replace all 20 lakh street lights with LED bulbs

Mumbai, Feb 15: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra fadanvis Wednesday said that all the street lights under the jurisdiction of all corporations, nagar palikas and nagar parishads will be replaced by LED bulbs to save energy.

To replace all the old traditional street lights under the local self-government bodies in the state, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today between the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) and Urban Development Department in presence of the Chief Minister. Fadanvis was speaking on the occasion. Energy Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Principal Secretary of Urban Development Department Manisha Mhaiskar and Managing Director of EESL Saurabhkumar were present on this occasion.

The Chief Minister said that Central Government took note of the AMRUT scheme implemented successfully by the Urban Development Department. He expected that the work on LED street lights should also be done without compromising with quality. He directed the EESL to complete this work by December 2018.

As per the MoU, 20 lakh LED bulbs will be fixed on all major roads in Maharashtra under the Street Lighting National Program of EESL. This will save 500 MW power and reduce the electricity bill by 50 percent.

394 urban local bodies under the Urban Development Department will be benefitted with this scheme in phases. Under this project the present sodium and mercury vapor bulbs will be replaced by LED bulbs and maintenance of these bulbs will be done for next seven years. Main cities like Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nasik, Aurangabad, Nagpur, Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, and Nanded will be included in this scheme.

As per the MoU the EESL has shouldered the responsibility of supplying street LED bulbs, fix them, start them and their maintenance besides changes in the warranty period etc.

Presentation of work done by EESL in Amravati Municipal Corporation area was submitted on the occasion. Municipal President and CEO Organisation felicitated Chief Minister Fadanvis.
