New Delhi, February 15: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sent a notice to the Karnataka government over reports of death of four persons and hospitalisation of 35 others after allegedly consuming contaminated water at Maidolalu village of Shivamogga district.

The NHRC has sought a detailed report from the chief secretary of the state in four weeks. The commission has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report about outbreak of gastroenteritis at Maidolalu village in Bhadravati taluk of Shivamogga district.

The Shivamogga district health officer has said that the stool samples of six of those hospitalised have been tested positive for cholera. He suspected that contamination of piped drinking water supplied to the residents by the gram panchayat has triggered this outbreak.

Zilla Panchayat sources have said that sewage water entered the underground drinking water supply pipeline in the village through a leakage.

Revenue minister Kagodu Thimmappa and Shivamogga MP B S Yeddyurappa visited the village yesterday. The minister has said that stern action will be initiated against gram panchayat for failing to ensure pure drinking water supply in the village.
