International Atomic Energy Agency to help Japan for nuclear security of 2020 games

Tokyo, February 16: Sports lover across the globe wait eagerly for two major sports events, Olympics and Paralympics. To ensure the security of athletes, spectators the International Atomic Energy Agency has signed an agreement with Japan. The next 2020 Olympics, Paralympics will be hosted in Tokyo.

The agency will work together with Japan to keep the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics safe from the threat of terrorism involving nuclear materials. IAEA experts will participate in events relating to the Tokyo games, it will loan equipment to Japan for detecting radiation, both the parties will share information on nuclear security issues. Other areas of cooperation will be decided in due course.

Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono and IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano observed the signing in Vienna. “The Agency welcomes the cooperation to support the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo, and is already cooperating with Japan by sharing the experiences of the Member States which previously hosted the Olympics,” IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said.

"We want to thoroughly cooperate with the IAEA to make sure the Olympics are safe," Kono said at the outset of the meeting. After the meeting ended, he said in the event the IAEA is able to re-enter North Korea, Japan would assist with the initial costs of securing the necessary equipment and personnel.

The IAEA serves as the global platform for strengthening nuclear security and assists Member States to prevent, detect and respond to theft, sabotage, unauthorized access, illegal transfer, or other malicious acts involving nuclear material or radioactive substances.
