Civic authority of Kolkata’s IT hub issues e-waste guideline

Kolkata, February 16: With emerging IT hubs, electronic equipments, the amount of e-waste also emerging in various places. Saltlake Sector V of Kolkata being the IT hub of the city is facing same crisis. To prevent further rise the civic body, Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA) has issued guidelines to all IT and other companies in Salt Lake.

The guideline directs the companies to set aside e-waste while disposing of waste daily. Waste collectors who go door-to-door waste collection in Sector V will be trained to differentiate e-waste from rest of the garbage. In this new venture, many NGOs will cooperate with NDITA as chairman Debashis Sen said.

The body is in talks with various agencies which can handle and recycle e-waste. If a company wants to dispose old computers from now on they can notify NDITA. The latter will place a request with a partner NGO to collect the waste. The fee of the service is not fixed till now.

The NDITA is building three compactor stations. Among those three, one is almost nearing completion. To reduce the amount of solid waste, compactor machines within the stations will work. One such machine can compress 14 metric tonnes of waste to 10 metric tonnes.
