Srinagar, February 19: Alert Indian security forces on Sunday eliminated one terrorist and foiled a major infiltration attempt along the Line of Control in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir. Meanwhile, Pakistani forces also resorted unprovoked firing to make infiltration bid successful.

A senior Army officer said, “Army has foiled an infiltration attempt by a group of terrorists along the Line of Control in Poonch district and eliminated one terrorist.” He said, “Pakistan army initiated unprovoked and indiscriminate firing from 5:15 pm along the LoC in Khari Karmara sector of Poonch to facilitate an infiltration attempt by a group of terrorists.”

"Suspicious movements by a group of four to five terrorists were noticed along LoC in Khari Karmara sector of Poonch during the evening," the officer added. Alert troops engaged the suspected militants and fired on them, he said adding that the troops foiled their attempt to cross over the LoC.

He further added that the search operation is underway in the area and a body of a slain terrorist with arms and ammunition was recovered. In the last week, security forces foiled a major infiltration attempt along the Line of Control in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir and eliminated two terrorists.

Importantly, twenty people including 11 security personnel and nine civilians were killed and over 75 others injured in Pakistani shelling along the LoC and the International Border (IB) in Jammu division since the beginning of this year. Interestingly, as many as 515 infiltration cases from across the border in Jammu and Kashmir were reported in the year 2017 in which 75 terrorists were killed.
