Bombay HC urges traffic dept to enable mobility of people in market places

Mumbai, February 2: In order to curb traffic congestion in markets areas, the Bombay High Court has directed the city Traffic Department to list down steps and measures to be taken to avoid traffic. The judges have also decided to pitch in the civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to come into effect and provide suggestions over this matter.

 

While highlighting the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) to the judges it came forward that there is poor maintenance and traffic management in crowded areas and market places like Kalba Devi, Crawford market and Chira Bazaar to name a few. Traffic in such areas becomes a problem as lanes become small and it creates a mess for the people to mobile from one place to another. Cars and public transportation curbs people's mobility to move and therefore it was important to take some actions on this growing traffic.

While reviewing the plea it was considered that there are narrow by lanes for the people to walk and are riddled by encroachments which makes it extremely difficult for the fire tenders and emergency service vehicles to gain access in case of an emergency. In consideration to this, the department has submitted an affidavit siting the details of the traffic police personnel’s allotted areas and their timing etc.

Mumbai is considered as a city which is always in a hustle and the people are always seem to be busy. Transportation has become very easy and it enables people for easy access but the traffic also becomes difficult now a days.Therefore the bench has observed that merely deputing the police personnel is not sufficient. They have directed Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to be made a respondent in the case so that the civic body, too, could pitch in with its own suggestions on the issue.
