Saudi Arabia banned expats from doing job in 12 sectors

Riyadh, February 2: Saudi Arabia with an aim to meet all the agendas under Vision 2030 and to provide more jobs to countrymen has banned expats from working in twelve sectors. Notably, Saudi Arabia is facing a major employment crisis since five years.

 

The Ministry of Labour and Social Development of Saudi Arabia on Thursday said that expats in Kingdom will not be allowed to work in twelve sectors. “The decision will come into effect from the next Hijri year,” the Minister added.

On the other side, the official spokesperson of Ministry of Labour and Social Development said, “The decision does not affect the memorandums of understanding signed with various regional governorates to restrict jobs to Saudis. The shop feminization will continue as planned."

According to the ban, expats will be restricted from working in watch shops, optical stores, medical equipment stores, electrical and electronics shops, outlets selling car spare part, building material shops, outlets selling all types of carpets, automobile and mobile shops, shops selling home furniture and ready-made office material, sale outlets of ready-made garments, children clothes and men's supplies, household utensils shops and pastry shops.

Importantly, the rising number of unemployment highlights the immense challenge faced by Riyadh and therefore to come out of this, kingdom pledged to create jobs for its nationals by cutting down jobs for foreigners. Interestingly, the Saudi economy has added about 433,000 jobs a year on average over the last 10 years but still lacks behind.
