Myanmar turns down proposed UNSC visit citing high tension in Rakhine

Yangon, February 2: Myanmar has turned the proposal of top UN body visit to the country saying it’s not right time for the visit. Myanmar told the United Nations Security Council not to visit during February, though mentioned that it is not completely rejecting the proposed tour.

Kuwait's U.N. Ambassador Mansour Ayyad Al-Otaibi , who holds the council presidency for February, spoke about the decision of Myanmar on Thursday. He also said Myanmar authorities were not opposed to such a visit but they just think this is not right time.

Myanmar authorities were trying to organize a visit for diplomats based in the country but emphasized that tensions are high in Rakhine state at the moment. Since the crackdown of conflict, the situation in Rakhine has not improved much.

United Nations Security Council has demanded to allow hundreds of thousands of Muslim Rohingya who were driven out of Rakhine state during an army crackdown to return. Though Bangladesh and Myanmar has signed a Rohingya deportation deal but the actual work is still not much progressed. Nearly 700,000 Rohingya have crossed into Bangladesh to take refuge since the conflict broke down.
