Islamabad, February 20: In a move that raised a lot of eyebrows, Pakistan has made Chinese-language Mandarin one of its official languages by passing a motion in the Senate. The move was taken to strengthen the ties with China and for effective communication in the wake of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor.

Pakistan's Ambassador to the US Hussain Haqqani tweeted: "In a short span of 70 years, Pakistan has flirted with promoting four languages that were not the mother tongue of many people in the country - English, Urdu, Arabic, and now Chinese -- ignoring native languages."

Dawn News reported that Pakistanis are more interested in learning the Chinese language. This is because they believe that knowing and having an understanding of Mandarin would mean more job opportunities in Pakistan and China.

Interestingly, Pakistan is yet to regard widely spoken Punjabi and Pashto as its official languages. 44% Pakistanis speak Punjabi and rest speaks Sindhi, Pashto, Balochi and host of other languages. Ignoring all these languages, Pakistan just declared Chinese language to be an official language of the nation.
