Geo-tagging of water resources in Himalayan regions to ensure water supply in the areas

Dehradun, February 22: In the wake of initiating the process of geo-tagging of water resources in Himalayas, Union Minister of Water and Sanitation Uma Bharti confirmed that the procedure has been started and directions have been issued to identify the system of mechanism in the region. This geo-tagging of water resources will help to provide water supply in the State Capital and other interior areas where the supply is comparitively less. 

Taking forward the process to provide complete water resource the Ministry decided to initiate the geo-tagging for the nearby areas. The Drinking Water and Sanitation minister also said the Centre has sanctioned Rs 27 crore for Uttarakhand for implementation of projects such as Swajal and those related to making villages open defecation free (ODF).

In a meeting with Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, she said Uttarakhand should prepare projects to restore ground water levels in the state, and send proposals of the same to the Centre. The chief minister said the state government was working on a project to construct a dam on the Song river to provide drinking water to the state capital and other areas.

Earlier as a special initiative, Bagori Ganga Gram project had been launched along with New Swajal Project at Bagori and Gangotri Iconic Place at Dunda village in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand with the budget of 11.88 and 32 lakhs respectively. Besides creating cleanliness, providing basic amenities to the people of Ganga bank villages, these projects would also generate employment.
