New Delhi, February 22: Recently Maldives Government extended its state of emergency for further 30 days which has quaked the political and social environment nationally and internationally too. The Indian government has issued a press release on this issue in which the government has cited the decision of emergency as an offense as it is violating the constitution of Maldives in the name of national security.

The release of Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) states that “We are deeply dismayed that the Government of Maldives has extended the State of Emergency for a further 30 days. The manner in which the extension of the State of Emergency was approved by the Majlis in contravention of the Constitution of Maldives is also a matter of concern.”

The Indian Government has also indicated that restoration of normalcy in the Maldives may be delayed because of the consequent delay in the resumption of the political process and the continuing suspension of the functioning of democratic institutions including the judiciary.

It is important to ensure that all democratic institutions are allowed to function in a fair and transparent manner in accordance with the Constitution says the Indian Government.

Since President Yameen declared an emergency in the Maldives from February 5 the situations were getting worst followed by several arrests, huge protests, crash in tourism etc.

To handle the situation Former President Mohamed Nasheed had urged the Indian Government to extend its helping hand and get the Maldives out of it.

The unrest began in 2015 when Nasheed, the country's first democratically elected leader, was jailed on "terrorism" charges relating to the arrest of a judge during his tenure. The trial declared unfair by the UN, prompted widespread protests and resulted in the arrest of hundreds of dissidents.
