India Canada vow to strengthen ties in the area of security, terrorism and extremism; ink 6 MoUs

New Delhi, February 23: Today morning Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was warmly received at Rashtrapati Bhavan along with the ceremonial welcome ceremony. Also present were President Ram Nath Kovind and Union Cabinet Ministers. India Canada vowed together to strengthen ties in the area of security, terrorism and extremism. 

Canadian PM along with his family paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat and the whole family inked into visitor’s book.PM Modi received PM Justin Trudeau at Hyderabad House.

Meanwhile, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted saying “New momentum in India-Canada ties.”

Further, PM Modi along with Canadian PM Trudeau held talks discussing mutual cooperation in trade and investments, energy, healthcare, IT, Startup, science and technology, defence and security, tourism and people-to-people contacts. Several MoU were inked between both the nations.

 

Addressing the press conference ahead, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said that Trudeau he is happy he has visited the country along with his family. He added that he is also happy that Trudeau was able to visit several cities across the country. PM Modi continued saying that, "India has attached a high importance to pursuing its strategic partnership with Canada. Our ties are based on democracy, pluralism, the supremeity of law and the mutual interaction."

Stressing on combating terrorism mutually, PM Modi said the two countries have agreed to strengthen ties in the area of security, terrorism and extremism.

Further PM Modi said that a MoU on higher education has been renewed between India and Canada. This will benefit the students of both nations; and those travelling to and from India, he adds.

PM Modi said, "Prime Minister Trudeau and I exchanged our view on global issues. We discussed in detail the situation of Afghanistan. It is evident and true that the government and the people of Afghanistan need support in tackling the menace of terrorism and in establishing a peaceful atmosphere in the country."

 

He added further, "We share common views on the proliferation of North Korea, safety and peace in Indo-Pacific region and independence of democratic institutions in Maldives."

PM Trudeau said India is a natural partner and a trusted friend. "Modi and I welcome cooperation in several sectors," he said. He adds that India is the second largest source of students in Canadian universities. The two countries are similar in terms of democratic and cultural practices as well.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted glimpses of his visit with Canadian PM Justin Trudeau. Also PM Modi informed said that the talks with PM PM Justin Trudeau were fruitful. Our discussions focused on closer India-Canada cooperation in various sectors including investment, trade, energy and stronger people-to-people relations.

Addressing a joint media meet, Modi said: "India and Canada can work together in every sector. We discussed many issues, including defense cooperation. Terrorism and extremism are a threat to countries like ours and to fight these elements, we should come together."

Hailing Canada as a energy superpower, the Indian Prime Minister said that it "can help us meet our growing demands for energy."

"India and Canada will deepen social and economic ties. Canada Pension Fund is a large investor in India. We look forward to allowing Canada to double its investments in India," the Indian Prime Minister added.

"We have the responsibility to set the right parameters to make the economy benefit everyone, and not just the rich. India-Canada partnership must create jobs," Trudeau said.
