Kohima/Shillong, February 25: Campaigning for the Nagaland and Meghalaya assembly elections has picked up as the contesting parties and their prominent leaders are making all possible efforts to woo the voters. Polling in both the states will be held on Tuesday.
Several heavyweight leaders have addressed rallies in Meghalaya for their candidates. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers Rajnath Singh, Smriti Irani, Piyush Goel , Assam Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal and BJP Chief Amit Shah campaigned for the BMP candidates.
On the other hand, Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, senior leaders Sashi Tharoor, C P Joshi also tried to woo voters in favour of Congress candidates.
Other parties including NCP, NPP and UDP among others also addressed rallies. The polling at the Williamnagar assembly seat has been adjourned following the death of a candidate in a militant attack.
Also, various Civil society Organizations are also appealing the voters to exercise their franchise consciously and without corruption and proxy.
The State Government has declared the polling day as Paid Holiday for all the employees of Government and Private to enable them to participate and exercise their franchise.
The counting of votes will be taken up on the 3rd of next month along with Tripura. Each of these Northeastern states has a 60-member Assembly.
