Beijing, February 26: In an unprecedented move, the Chinese Communist Party is keen to remove a constitutional clause that limits Presidential service to just two terms in office. This would mean that the current Premier Xi Jinping could remain in office indefinitely.

As per the China’s Constitution, President Jinping must step down after the completion of his two terms. With his first term coming to an end, his second term is more than confirmed.

The Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee made public its proposal on amendments to China's Constitution Sunday.

The CPC Central Committee proposed revising the clause "The term of office of the President and Vice-President of China is the same as that of the National People's Congress, and they shall serve no more than two consecutive terms" to "The term of office of the President and Vice-President of the People's Republic of China is the same as that of the National People's Congress."

Xi, 64, cemented his status as the most powerful Chinese leader since Mao in the 1970s at last year's twice-a-decade Communist Party congress, where his name and a political theory attributed to him were added to the party constitution as he was given a second five-year term as general secretary.

Xi is coming to the end of his first five-year term as president and is set to be appointed to his second term at an annual meeting of the rubber-stamp parliament that starts March 5. The proposal to end term limits will likely be approved at that meeting.
