After 37 years, Sri Lanka called for Indo-Lanka ferry service

Colombo, February 27: The Sri Lankan government has invited expression of interest (EOI) to operate a passenger cum cargo vessel service between port of Colombo and the port of Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu.

The proposed service will be first of its kind between the two countries after end of LTTE war in 2009. The service was discontinued in 1980s after the ethnic conflict erupted in Sri Lanka. The MoU to recommence the service, was signed between India and Sri Lanka in 2011.

 

The Chairman of Cabinet Appointed Negotiating Committee (CANC) on behalf of Ceylon Shipping Corporation (CSC) has EOI from interested and qualified service providers to operate the passenger cum cargo vessel/s between port of Colombo and the Port of Tuticorin on Build, Own and Operate (BOO) basis.

Ceylon Shipping Corporation Ltd being the National Sea Carrier of Sri Lanka which operates under the Ministry of Ports and Shipping is entrusted with to select a Service Provider to operate a Passenger Ferry Service cum cargo vessel/s (ROPAX) between the Port of Colombo and the Port of Tuticorin on Build Own and Operate (BOO) basis by the Cabinet of Ministers.

Initially the ferry service will be for a period of one year subject to further extensions based on the performance.

The intended purpose other MOU was that this Service would be a bridge for the promotion of Economic Co-operation, Social and Cultural ties between two countries.

The Service providers who express their interest will be shortlisted and will be issued Request for Proposal (RFP) documents for due submission of technical and financial proposals for final selection.
