JK Govt withdraws cases against first-time offenders involved in stone pelting incidents during 2008-17

Jammu, February 7: In a bid to restore the trust of people in the administration, law and order etc, Jammu and Kashmir government led by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti taking a massive step on Tuesday and ordered the withdrawal of cases against first-time offenders involved in stone pelting incidents during the period 2008-17.

 

Notably, in the last three years, 4,066 FIRs have been registered against 14,208 stone pelters in the Kashmir Valley. Therefore, Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered the withdrawal of cases against first-time offenders during the period 2008-17.

In the last three years, as many as 11,566 security personnel have faced injuries in 4,736 stone-pelting incidents in the Valley. While two policemen and 110 civilians have also lost their lives during these incidents.

Earlier, in the month of November last year, Jammu and Kashmir government ordered the withdrawal of cases against 4,327 youth involved in stone pelting incidents. The decision was taken after a recommendation by a panel led by Director General of Police SP Vaid ordered the withdrawal of cases against 4,327 youth involved stone pelting incidents. The cases were filed between 2008 and 2014.

Importantly, this is not the first instance when CM Mehbooba Mufti ordered the withdrawal of cases against youth involved stone pelting incidents. Two months after assuming power in 2016, CM Mehbooba Mufti had withdrawn 104 cases, filed between 2008 and 2014, against 634 local youths. However, the process was stopped due to continued unrest in the valley.
