In a unique way to keep creating awareness on road safety, a Safe Drive Save Life park has been developed along one of the busiest stretches in Howrah. The park has been developed on a stretch of the plot along Foreshore Road and was inaugurated on Wednesday. Mayor of Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC) Rathin Chakraborty and Commissioner of Howrah City Police D P Singh were present at the inaugural ceremony.

This is the first initiative to develop a Safe Drive Save Life park. Hundreds of vehicles ply on the road round-the-clock and so the plot has been chosen considering that the maximum number of people can have a look at it. There are some schools in the area too and students can visit the park as well. Children play an important role in creating awareness and can inform their parents about the necessary detailed information about the safety measures.

People can go through the messages painted on the walls of the park while taking a walk and they would like to visit the place over and again as it has been beautified by carrying out landscaping. People of all ages and from all walks of life can visit it.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had introduced the statewide Safe Drive Save Life campaign to check the number of road accidents in the state that claimed several lives. Though there are some recent incidents in which around 50 people were killed, the statewide campaign had helped in reducing the total number of accidents by a huge margin.

The state witnessed a drop in the number of deaths due to road accidents in Bengal by 16.06%, road injuries have reduced by 12.10% and fatalities have reduced by 13.34% during the period between January and October 2017 as compared to January-October, 2016. However, the Chief Minister had earlier directed the police to ensure necessary measures as most accidents take place in the winter due to heavy fog and to continue with the campaign till February 15 to make people aware about road safety. The Supreme Court had also appreciated the steps taken by the Bengal government in reducing road mishaps.
