Rajnath Singh urges Mizoram-Assam to take all the possible measures for peace and stability

Aizawl, March 13: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh intervened and urged Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla to ensure peace in the Mizoram side of the border and not to allow people to gather at Bairabi and stage protests. 

On Monday, students of Mizoram staged protests seeking the resignation of the Congress government for allegedly failing to protect the state's territory and students. Also, the situation along the Assam-Mizoram border turned violent after Assam police resorted to lathi-charge to control some protesting students, where among others, a journalist was also injured.

 

 

The protests came in the wake of last week's alleged lathicharge and firing by Assam police on Mizo students who were trying to construct a wooden resting shed on land they claimed was donated by former Mizoram chief minister Ch. Chhunga's wife Lalrothangi near Bairabi town in Kolasib district on the northwestern boundary of the two states.

To put light on this dispute, CM Lal Thanhawla wrote letter to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh seeking his intervention in the border disputes to restore normalcy at the earliest.

Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba will meet the chief secretaries of Mizoram and Assam and carry forward the dialogues on boundary dispute, a home ministry official said. The ministry is in constant touch with the governments of Assam and Mizoram, the official said.

The state governments were asked to take appropriate steps to ensure law and order, prevent the situation from escalating and bring the situation under control.

Home ministry also told the state governments to enforce prohibitory orders and deployment of forces wherever necessary.
