Lok Sabha passes Finance Bill by voice vote amid opposition’s disruption

New Delhi, March 14: The Lok Sabha has cleared the Finance Bill 2018 in the House today a day after it was supposed to be taken up. Speaker Sumitra Mahajan invoked guillotine to push the Bill, which was scheduled to be introduced in the Parliament on Tuesday.

Although the Opposition raised objections to it, Mahajan said that the urgency of transaction of financial business has forced her to take up the Bill immediately. 

Union Finance minister Arun Jaitley moved the Finance Bill as well as Appropriation Bill was passed with a voice vote amid chaos.

Lok Sabha has been seeing a major protest by the Opposition as well as the BJP allies AIADMK and TDP over multiple issues including PNB fraud, Andhra Pradesh special status and Cauvery river dispute.

The house was first adjourned till noon soon after it met at 11AM. As the protest continued with MPs taking to the Well of the house and resorting to slogans, Finance Minister Arun Jaitely moved the bill amid noise.

The Finance Bill is necessary to give effect to the financial proposals of the Central Government for the financial year 2018-19.

The Appropriation Bill, 2018 will authorize payment and appropriation of certain sums from and out of the Consolidated Fund of India for the services of the financial year 2018-19.
