Raksha Mantri signifies #TamilNaduDefenseCorridor as a mantra to boost India’s defense sector with ‘Make-in-India’ mission

Chennai, March 16: "In an effort to reduce imports & encourage indigenous production, ‘Make in India’ was introduced by Honorable PM Narendra Modi. In defence, we encourage emerging private sector companies to tie up with PSUs to manufacture world class equipment,” said Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Boosting India’s defense sector today Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman interacted with around 200 local industrialists at Tiruchirapalli at Tamil Nadu Defense Corridor. 

Five nodal cities of Chennai were introduced under Tamil Nadu Defense Corridor.

Chennai has a strong defense production ecosystem with a presence of vendors which work closely with Defence PSUs. Chennai will also be the host city of DefexpoI 2018 which will be held from April 11-14, 2018.

 

Hosur is an industrial hub with a robust automobile and manufacturing industry. The units located at Hosur make products such as trucks, automobile parts, motorcycles & electronics.

 

The Salem region is rich in mineral deposits. It also has a strong presence of steel plants and allied industries.

 

Coimbatore has 45,000 industrial units in Coimbatore-Tirupur-Erode Corridor. New Defence Innovation Centre for MSMEs & Start-ups is also proposed in the city.

Tiruchirappalli has rich fabrication and engineering cluster with more than 2500 Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

 

Interacting with the local industrialists, Sitharaman stressed to create synergy and further strengthen the defence ecosystem in Tiruchirappalli which is one of the nodal cities of Tamil Nadu Defense Corridor. Nirmala Sitharaman tweeted saying Make II Procedure is crucial in supporting private defence industry in India. Multiple amendments have been recently made in the policy to involve startups in the indigenisation of defence production and foster innovative in defence.
